Module 8

Caring for the Vulnerable: Orphans, Widows, and the Elderly

The Quran repeatedly emphasizes the care of orphans, widows, and the elderly as a test of faith.

Foundations

So as for the orphan, do not oppress [him]. (Quran 93:9-10). Caring for orphans includes protecting their property and providing emotional support.

Social Support

Honoring the elderly is a sign of a compassionate society. Providing a network of support for widows and the bereaved is a community responsibility.

"I and the person who looks after an orphan and provides for him, will be like this in Paradise (holding his fingers together)."

— Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ)

Modern Applications

  • Sponsor an orphan through a reputable organization.

  • Visit and support the elderly in your family and community.

  • Advocate for better social services for vulnerable populations.
