حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ الْأَسْوَدِ بْنِ قَيْسٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو يَعْنِي ابْنَ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْعَاصِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ:‏‏‏‏ إِنَّا أُمَّةٌ أُمِّيَّةٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏لَا نَكْتُبُ وَلَا نَحْسُبُ الشَّهْرُ هَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا . وَخَنَسَ سُلَيْمَانُ أُصْبُعَهُ فِي الثَّالِثَةِ يَعْنِي تِسْعًا وَعِشْرِينَ وَثَلَاثِينَ.

The Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم said: We ae an unlettered nation, we cannot write nor calculate. The month is thus, and thus, and thus.'" (one of the narrators) Sulaiman closed one of his fingers the third time, indicating that a month is twenty-nine days, and (sometimes) thirty.
