Who was Imam an-Nawawi?
Yahya ibn Sharaf an-Nawawi compiled the Forty Hadith and Riyad us-Salihin, both available on Sirah. These selections organize earlier narrations for study and practice. His introduction to the Forty Hadith explains the choice of reports dealing with broad religious principles and the omission of full transmission chains to help readers learn them.

Biography and approach
In the Forty Hadith introduction, al-Nawawi explains that many selected reports come from Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim. Riyad us-Salihin arranges material under subjects of conduct and worship. A reference to al-Nawawi as the compiler of a selection is distinct from identifying the earlier collection in which a report appears.
